Director's Safety Message

Over the past year, SCI has made meaningful progress in strengthening our safety culture. Increased safety awareness across the workforce, improved findings during safety walkthroughs, and strong completion of required safety training demonstrate a growing commitment to recognizing hazards and taking action before incidents occur.

These improvements reflect more than compliance—they show that safety is becoming an increasingly visible part of how we work every day. By continuing to speak up, address findings, apply our training, and look out for one another, we reinforce a culture where safety is a shared responsibility and an essential part of SCI’s success.

Thank you for your continued commitment to making SCI a safer workplace.

Congratulations August Safety Champions!

SAFETY CHAMPION SPOTLIGHT:
CONDEC TEAM

Turning a Near Miss into a Lasting Safety Improvement

The Condec team recently demonstrated exactly what SCI's safety culture is all about. After experiencing a near miss, the team did not simply address the immediate situation, they evaluated the process, identified opportunities for improvement, and implemented additional engineering controls to eliminate or significantly reduce the hazard.

Their proactive response helps protect SCI employees and adds safety controls for customers who may purchase and operate the equipment.

A near miss is not a failure, it is an opportunity to improve. Because the Condec team chose to act, they helped prevent the potential for serious injury or loss of life while setting a strong example for continuous improvement.

Thank you, Condec Team, for your professionalism, innovation, and commitment to protecting people.

Increasing Trend

This Month's Focus

September is Suicide Prevention Month

Suicide Prevention Month is an important reminder that looking out for one another extends beyond physical safety. A strong workplace is one where people feel respected, supported, and comfortable reaching out when they are struggling.

Take time to check in with your coworkers, listen without judgment, and encourage those who may need help to seek available support. A simple conversation can make a meaningful difference. Together, we can help create a workplace where no one feels they have to face difficult times alone.

SCI offers a fully confidential service, the Sentara Employee Assistance Program (EAP), available to you and your household at no cost and open to all SCI employees. (1-800-899-8174) The username is SENTARAEAP.

Near Miss Reporting

See it. Stop it. Report it.

JHA & Pre-task Plans

Plan the work. Work the plan.

🚢 Maritime Safety Reminder

Falls are a leading cause of shipyard fatalities, while work in confined and enclosed spaces has a greater likelihood of causing fatalities, severe injuries, and illnesses than other types of shipyard work.

Preventing an injury or fatality starts before the job begins. Plan the work, identify the hazards, and verify the controls before starting. Guard deck openings and edges, use required fall protection, maintain good housekeeping, and never enter a confined or enclosed space until required atmospheric testing and authorization have been completed. Most importantly, if conditions change or something does not look right, stop the job and speak up. No schedule or deadline is worth an injury or a life.

At SCI, our goal is simple: do quality work, do it safely, and make sure everyone goes home at the end of the day.
